From Toronto, ON: take HWY 400 north toward Barrie; follow signs for HWY 11 and continue north to Huntsville; follow signs in Huntsville for HWY 60 East to Algonquin Provincial Park; follow HWY 60 into the park and look for the turn-off for Opeongo Lake (prominently signed and approx. 49 km (30 miles) from the West entrance of the park); follow the paved turn-off road north 5 km (3.5 miles) to the main dock and parking lot.

Opeongo Lake is Algonquin Park's largest lake and offers canoeists a vast expanse of exploration possibilities. The coordinates are for the main dock at the south end of the lake. Although the winds can be rather stark on the lake, with few exceptions such as severe storms, the waters are suitable for novice and experienced canoeists alike.

Algonquin Park boasts over 2000 km (1250 miles) of canoe routes, Opeongo having many of those routes as the park's largest lake. The scenery on this and surrounding lakes (accessible by portage) is wonderful to experience, and there is no shortage of Canadian wildlife in their natural habitat to be seen: loons, moose, beavers, and more. With the appropriate camping permit, you can pretty much spend anywhere from a few days to a few weeks exploring this lake with one campsite as your outpost, or you can pack your gear and set up new campsites as you go.
