Hell's Half Acre Lava Trail traverses the desert ecosystem of the Snake River Plain including rough terrain, unusual scenery, and contorted landscapes created from multiple lava flows estimated to be 4100 years in age. Expect unimproved conditions with poles marking trail routes (Red - Vent Loop, Blue - Lava Flow Loop).

There are two possibilities for this hike:
1) The paved, educational trails at the rest stops before Blackfoot on Highway 15. They are very short, and unless you happen to be at the rest stop, I don't think it's worth the time.
2) A rustic, unimproved trail located at mile marker 287 when traveling west on Highway 20 from Idaho Falls. It is in a pretty desolate location; I didn't even get cell phone service there. So, I would not recommend going alone. Also, take lots of water since it is basically a desert (yes, there were cacti) without many places for shade. Also, the word "trail" is up for interpretation. Basically you make your own trail from trail marker to trail marker. This involves climbing over rocks and some thought on the path, but I found it a lot of fun. There is a 1.5 loop and a 4.5 loop to the main vent. Overall, a very different, enjoyable hike.
