Elysian Park is a good place for a laid-back urban hike with the family, especially suited for leisurely exploration.
The second largest city park in LA, 600-acre Elysian retains much of its natural chaparral, a landscape crisscrossed with hiking trails.
The Portola Trail which circles the park in a northeastern direction is approximately 3 miles one way ending just over the Pasadena Freeway (I-110) at the Portola campsite located at Park Row Drive and North Broadway on the outskirts of Chinatown. There is a memorial commemorating the Portola campsite.
There is a lack of good trail maps which be confusing for those unfamiliar with the area. Birders also frequent the park; recent sightings include red-tailed hawks, western bluebirds, a black-headed grosbeak, and Lucy's warbler. On weekends, the park is full of picnicking families, exercise hounds, and nature lovers. If there happens to be a home baseball game, the area is even livelier; try to plan your visit so it doesn't coincide with the beginning or end of a game, or you will likely find yourself caught in a massive traffic jam.
