From San Diego take I-15 to Hwy 79 (Temecula). Go east to Hwy 371 (Palms to Pines Highway). Take Hwy 371 to Hwy 74. Go North to Apple Canyon Rd. (Look for Hurkey Creek Park on right). Go east on Apple Canyon Rd. 3 miles to trailhead parking (dirt lot).
Begin hike at Humber Park in Idyllwild. To get to Humber Park take Hwy 74 N from Apple Canyon Rd (where you left car 2) until you get to Hwy 243. Take 243 into Idyllwild, then follow Pincrest Ave until it turns into Fern Valley Rd. Follow Fern Valley Rd. to Humber Park. (You need an adventure pass to park here...it's only $5.00 at Idyllwild ranger station.
This may sound confusing but it's not. It is very easy and quick to get from point to point.

This is a very strenuous 17.5 mile day shuttle hike..(Bring PLENTY of water and food for this trip). This is NOT a beginners hike and you should already be in good shape before you begin it.
Start by leaving cars at both ends of this hike.
Begin hiking by taking the Devils Slide Trail (Humber Park starting point) up to Saddle Junction (2.5 miles), then go south on the Pacific Crest Trail to the Tahquitz Peak lookout tower (1.5 miles). Stunning views of Mt. Jacinto peak and Suicide Rock area. Take Pacific Crest Trail all the way down to Spittler Peak Trail (8.5 miles) The views down to the desert from the trail are sublime and the distances seen are visually stunning.
Finally, take the Spittler Peak Trail (5 miles) down to car 2 and call it a day.
Best time of year to hike this is during late spring and early fall.
As a bonus treat after the hike, head south on Hwy 74 and stop at the Paradise Cafe (jct hwy's 371/74). They have great food and are very hiker friendly.
