From Escalante east on 12 about 5 miles to hole-in-the-rock road. Travel 16 miles to Egypt turnoff. This is a 4wd-recommended road. Travel about 10 miles taking about 45 minutes to the end of the road and the lookout and start point. Walk to the sign-in book and look to about 1 or 2 o'clock and you will see Golden Cathedral - a large dome raised up. You cannot see the canyon entrance at this point. Drop down the 500foot "cliff" - more of a scramble down and up. Make a beeline towards the dome. When you get close to the last cliff before the Escalante River, look for the sand dune-type drop down to the river. Go down and to the right looking for where the canyon meets the river. Find a crossing - you will need to wade about 20 feet or so across. Then a 20 minute hike up the canyon. I recommend water booties for this last part. At the end of Neon Canyon is Golden Cathedrdal. The hike is about 5 miles each way with about 1100 vertical. Allow 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours each way depending upon your condition and the temperature. Bring plenty of water and do not try this hike unless you have done a similar one before.

The entrance to Neon Canyon and the hike up it is pretty much flat. You may need to cross the canyon stream a few times and get wet depending upon water levels. It is a 15-20 minute hike to the end where the cathedral is with its two pot-holes; sometimes there are people repelling down through it. We saw "day" bats the first time. The canyon walls and the cathedral are best photographed in flat light in the early to late morning. The colors are neon-like as the light bounces back and forth across the walls.

Neon is a great canyon, but has a potentially dangerous keeper pothole. It's a good idea to check current conditions and have knowledge of keeper pothole escape techniques if you attempt to descend the technical portion of Neon.

A long hike and better not to try it in the heat as you will suck up water. First time, I took the more traditional route more to the left and north. This is more convoluted and requires crossing the Escalante 2 or 3 times as it snakes ("S") down to Neon Canyon. We got lost in the bush for a half hour trying to find a short-cut back. The way I am writing is more direct. No deep sand to hike through and all open with low brush. The dome is the largest of the 2 or3 you see when you look out.
