St. Lawrence Seway Land & Ruins Ontario

The Old St. Lawrence Seaway property located in the heart of the Niagara Region provides some unique hiking opportunities.

Along the trails there are remnants of the old Welland Canal from the 1800's.

The 800km Bruce Trail goes through some of this area, so the paths are easy to find.

In this area you will find numerous train bridges - some are still in use so use caution!

You'll find steep drop-offs near the old canal locks where you can observe the giant oak timbers and rough hewn stone which created the old lock system. You will also be able to see scrapes and dings in the stones from when boats used to travel through here. Exercise great caution as it is easy to fall down the 10m locks to the shallow rocky water below.

There is an old train tunnel amidst the hiking trails from the Grand Trunk Railroad, some people state the tunnel is haunted. It's been bricked over by the seaway but often times the doors have been ripped off by vandals and entry is possible.

There is a large old dam here as well which you can hike over to as well as lots of old trails that criss-cross the area.

There is a lot of history in this area and it's well worth the time go go and visit.
